Did you know that over 85% of chronic disease is related to lifestyle?
Lifestyle Medicine is the optimal use of diet, exercise, sleep, and social connectedness to promote health. It also highlights stress management and avoidance of risky substances. These tools are employed as the primary therapeutic modality, not just for treatment but also reversal, of chronic disease. Behavior change strategies physicians can employ to help patients live healthier are another important part taught to residents.
This incredibly powerful evidence-based discipline augments our robust curriculum for all family medicine residents at Soin. We have multiple interactive didactic presentations per year as well as a dedicated lifestyle medicine consultation clinic in our Beavercreek office.
For those residents who want to further excel in this field, we offer a Lifestyle Medicine track option. The Lifestyle medicine track provides residents with more comprehensive education and experience. It prepares them for and qualifies them to take the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine certification exam.
Lifestyle Medicine not only improves the health of the patient, but also the provider. At Kettering, you will find a core faculty that is health-conscious and eager to mentor you regarding improving your well-being, as well as how to educate your patients on healthful living.
According to the World Health Organization, healthier lifestyle choices could prevent up to 40% of cancer and 80% of heart disease and stroke. There is no pill we can prescribe that even comes close!
The list below contains the Lifestyle Medicine topics taught in the curriculum, covering the ABLM competencies:
