Kettering Main Campus Department of Internal Medicine accepts applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We will begin reviewing applications in September.

NOTE: For the 2024 ERAS^® cycle, our Internal Medicine residency program will be collecting and reviewing data from applicants' supplemental ERAS applications. Applicants will be required to complete the MyERAS application, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

The supplemental ERAS application is designed to help applicants share more information about themselves and assist our program in finding applicants that fit our program's setting and mission. There is no cost to applicants and participation is optional.

When should I apply?

Applications are accepted through ERAS for both Internal Medicine and Transitional Year programs as early as September.

We have no letter of recommendation quantity requirement. Rather, we strongly encourage letters of support from individuals who have worked with you in a clinical, mentoring, leadership, or scholarly capacity to facilitate commentary on your clinical acumen, work ethic, dedication, and interpersonal communication skills.

USMLE and COMLEX Examinations

We have no minimum requirement for USMLE/COMLEX scores and look at an applicant's entire application package before making our interview invitations. We will not require Step 2 CK/COMLEX Level 2-CE scores for an invitation to interview; however, we will require that applicants share their scores with us by the end of January. Our residents typically have a minimum score of 235 on USMLE 1 & 2 CK or a minimum of 520 on COMLEX Level 1 & 2-CE. As the USMLE/COMLEX transitions to pass/fail on Step 1/Level 1, we expect a passing score.

When should I expect interview invitations?

We anticipate sending invitations in early to mid-October. Please note that we continue to review applications and send invitations throughout the interview season.

When do interviews take place?

Interviews are conducted four days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) starting in mid-October thru January. Interviews are scheduled in ERAS; however, you are always welcome to reach out via email if you have difficulty finding a date that will work with your schedule.

Interview Day:

We will be conducting interviews both in-person and virtually. We believe, based on recent feedback, that applicants like to have an opportunity to see the hospital and meet our residents. All interview events will take place on the date of your interview. We do not schedule any additional activities.

Although we believe that in-person interviews provide the highest yield, we certainly understand if you do not feel comfortable interviewing in-person and will be happy to accommodate a virtual interview. Please let us know what you prefer.

Either way, regardless of whether the interview is in-person or virtually, it will not affect how you are ranked by our programs.

An interview day with our program will include the following:

What should I expect regarding post-interview communication?

If you have any questions after your interview day, you are welcome to contact us. We always appreciate getting feedback about your visit and hearing about your interest in the program. We typically try to stay in touch via email with you following your interview and leading up to the rank list due date.

Do you accept international graduates?

We are able to interview only the most exceptional candidates from non-U.S. medical schools due to the extremely competitive nature of our training programs. We cannot originate an H-1B visa, but can accept a J-1.

In considering medical graduates for interview, our typical international resident candidate will have recent clinical experience in the United States with excellent letters of reference.

Most candidates selected for interview will have graduated from medical school within the past two or three years.

International medical graduates are not required to have an ECFMG certificate or USMLE Step 3 results in order to apply and interview with our program; however, the ECFMG certification process must be complete and USMLE 2 CK or equivalent passed to be eligible for our rank list.
